Users

Everyone who visited, anonymous or identified — their profile, journeys, activity and traits, and how to delete a user's data.

Anonymous and identified users

Every browser that visits your site is a visitor, recognised on later visits by a first-party cookie. Until you say who they are, a visitor is anonymous and gets a stable made-up name (such as "azure meadowlark") and a coloured avatar, so you can still follow one person across visits.

Once you identify a visitor they show their real name, email and avatar, carry a green check in the list, and their traits appear on their profile. Everything they did before being identified stays attached.

One browser is one user

Identity is stored per visitor. The same person on a laptop and a phone is two users until you identify both — each then shows the same name and user ID, but they stay separate rows.

To identify a visitor, call window.datafast("identify", …) once they sign in. See Identify users.

The Users list

One row per visitor active in the selected date range, under the page's filters. A filter picks whole visits, so a user's counts include every event of the visits that matched.

SourceThe referrer, or channel, that brought them in first in this range.
DeviceDevice type, operating system and browser icons from their latest visit (hover for names).
PageviewsPages viewed in range.
EventsCustom events, outbound links, downloads, form submits and payments in range.
SessionsVisits in range.
Last seen / First seenTheir latest and earliest activity in range.

Controls

  • Search — pick what to search in: All (name, email, user ID, any other trait, and the raw visitor ID), Name, Email or User ID. Matching is case-insensitive and on the latest value, so a user who changed email is found by the new one.
  • Identified only hides anonymous visitors.
  • Click a numeric or date column header to sort by it; click again to flip the order.
  • The arrows page through 50 users at a time; the counter shows the total.
  • The Traits tab lists every trait key sent with identify, how many users carry it, their values, and the users holding each value.

The user page

SectionWhat it shows
HeaderName, identified badge, "Online now" (active in the last 5 minutes) or when they were last active, email, user ID, visitor ID and their local time.
StatsSessions, average session length, pageviews and events in range; first and last seen across all time.
ActivityA calendar of the last year, one square per day, darker for more sessions. Today is outlined; hover a day for its count. Days follow the site's timezone.
Top pages / EventsTheir most viewed pages and most frequent events in range.
JourneysTheir most common routes through the site in range. Each starts at a visit's first page; reloads of a page count once; single-page visits are left out. Pick 2–5 steps. "then left" marks a visit that ended sooner; the % is of their visits with a pageview.
SessionsEvery visit in range, newest first; expand one for its full timeline.
TraitsIdentified users only: user ID, email and every trait, at their latest value.
First touchHow they first arrived: first seen, channel, referrer, landing page and UTM tags.
Latest deviceLocation, device, OS, browser, screen, language and timezone from their most recent activity.
Locations / DevicesEvery place and device they've used, all time: sessions from each and when each was last seen.

The ⋯ menu at the top right copies the visitor ID (and the user ID, for identified users) or deletes the user's data.

Delete a user's data

Use this for a deletion request (for example under GDPR): open the user, choose ⋯ → Delete user data, and confirm. Deleting visitor data needs the Editor role or above.

  • Removed: every pageview, event, identify call (so their name and traits) and session recorded for that visitor on this site.
  • Their open visit, if they're on the site right now, is closed.
  • Every report — totals, charts, goals, funnels — is counted without them from then on.
  • Other sites, and the same person's other devices (other visitors), are not touched — delete those separately.

This can't be undone

The data is erased from storage, not hidden. There is no backup to restore it from. If the person visits again, their new activity is recorded as usual — stop identifying them, or exclude them, if they shouldn't be tracked.

FAQ

Why does someone show a funny name?

They're anonymous. The name is generated from their visitor ID so it stays the same on every visit; identify them to see their real name.

Why is a user missing from the list?

The list only shows people active in the selected range and matching its filters. Widen the range or clear filters.

Why doesn't the calendar match the date range?

It always shows the last year, so you can see how often someone comes back regardless of the range you're looking at.

Can I change a trait from the dashboard?

No — traits come from your site. Send identify again with the new value.

Does deleting a user remove their revenue?

No. Payments recorded from your payment provider are your financial records and are kept; delete the customer at the provider if needed.
